Installing the AccelScan Scanning Software on Windows Computers

Who can do this with default capabilities?

School Network/RP Administrators, School Network Staff, School Administrators, School Staff and Teachers

AccelScan scanners and the AccelScan Scanning software can be used to mark paper Accelerated Maths assignments. (Online assignments are marked automatically, so you do not need to use scanners to mark them.)

If you plan to use AccelScan for scoring, the AccelScan Scanning software should be installed on computers where you will be using the AccelScan to scan student answers to Accelerated Maths assignments. To download and install the software on Windows computers, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you are logged into the computer with the rights or permissions required to install software for all users. If you do not know whether you have those rights at the computer, or if you do not have those rights, contact your school's technology/computer coordinator.
  2. Before you log in, on the Renaissance Place Welcome page, click Check Software Requirements.
  3. If you have already logged in, on the Home page, click Product Administration, then Download Supporting Software.

  4. On the next page, click Downloads on the left (or on the top).
  5. When the Downloads page opens, first note the server name or IP address; then, under Renaissance Place Downloads, click AccelScan on the Windows tab. Save the file to your computer or network.
  6. Double-click the AccelScanInstaller1.43Win.msi file that you downloaded and saved on your computer. (You may need to use the Windows Explorer or My Computer to view the file.)
  7. The AccelScan Scanning Software Set-Up Wizard will start. Read the information in the Welcome panel of the Set-Up Wizard; then, click Next >.
  8. The Choose Destination Location panel will show you where the software will be installed.
  9. If the default location is acceptable, click Next >.

    If not, click Browse. In the Choose Folder dialog box, open the folder on your computer's hard drive where you want to install the software. When you have finished, click OK. Then, click Next > in the Wizard.

  10. Click Next > to confirm installation.
  11. Click Close when the Wizard tells you that installation is complete.
  12. To start the AccelScan program, click Start All Programs AccelScan Scanning Software AccelScan.
  13. When you start the program for the first time, the Server Settings dialog box will appear. (You can open it again later by clicking the Edit menu and selecting Server Settings.) Enter the server name or IP address that appeared on the page where you downloaded the program. (If you are connecting to a secure server, you must enter the server name, not the IP address.) If you are not sure which settings you need, see your Accelerated Maths administrator.
  14. When the AccelScan software attempts to communicate with your server, the Timeout value determines how many minutes it will attempt to communicate before notifying you of a problem if communication is not possible. Enter the value you prefer.

    Tick the Enable Server Ping box if you would like the AccelScan software to be able to check every 5 minutes to make sure it can still communicate with the server. If you have a slow connection to the server, this setting is not recommended.

    When you have finished, click OK.

    If the Server Settings dialog box doesn't appear, but you want to check the address, you can open it by clicking the Edit menu and selecting Server Settings.

  15. Enter the user name and password that you use to log in to Renaissance Place. Then, click Log In. To use the AccelScan Scanning software, you must be an Accelerated Maths user who has the right to mark assignments.
  16. The program will search for the AccelScan scanner that is connected to this computer. When the scanner is found, you will see the Ready to Scan message, and the screen will ask you to insert a card into the scanner.
  17. If the program cannot find the scanner, the program will notify you that the scanner was not found and that there were problems communicating with the scanner. If this happens, make sure the scanner is on; then, click the Scanner Settings button. Check the port and the Status. If the wrong port is shown, click the drop-down list and select the port where the AccelScan is connected. Once the AccelScan has been detected, the dialog box will show a picture of the scanner, and the Status will show the model number. You can also change the scanner's sensitivity to marks on the cards by clicking on the arrow and moving it to a less sensitive or more sensitive setting. Notice that the scanner settings also include a box labeled Allow Background Scanning; if this box is ticked, you can use the scanner with the software even when the software is in the background on your computer. When you have finished, click OK.

Notice the Teacher Mode icon on the AccelScan screen. Teachers should scan in Teacher Mode so that they have access to all program settings. When your students are doing their own scanning, click the Pupil Mode button to prevent access to program settings. In Pupil Mode, the software also uses the Accelerated Maths Marking preference settings to determine whether students should be allowed to scan their own exercises and tests.
