Generating Practices

Once you have assigned objectives to students in the Assignment Book, you can generate practices.

When you generate a practice, Accelerated Maths chooses the objectives to include from those that are at the Assigned () or Ready to Work () stage. Practices have assisted-response (multiple-choice) problems. They reinforce what the student has learned about the objectives. Since they are individualised, practices encourage cooperative learning among students.

Who can do this with default capabilities?

School Network/RP Administrators, School Administrators and Teachers

Follow these steps to generate practices:

  1. On the Home page, click Accelerated Maths, then Assignment Book. In the Assignment Book, if you have access to more than one school, use the School drop-down list to choose a school. If you have more than one class, click the Class drop-down list and choose the class for which you want to generate assignments. If you want to generate practices for a specific group, select the group from the Group drop-down list.

  2. This page may include a message in red text to notify you that you do not have the Renaissance Place Print plug-in you need to print directly. If this message appears and you plan to print directly to the printer without previewing, click Install Plug-In and download and install the Renaissance Place Print plug-in before you continue. Then, go back to the class Assignment Book.

  3. Tick the box next to each student who needs a practice. If you want to generate practices for all students in the class, you do not need to select the students before going on to the next step.
  4. Click Generate Practice on the left side of the page.
  5. On the next page, under Assignment Format, click Online or Paper.
  6. Online assignments:

Online practices are marked automatically when students log in and complete them.

    Paper assignments:

Paper practices can be marked by students or teachers using AccelScan, by students when they log in to the software and by students using Renaissance Responders or NEO 2s. Depending on the setting of the Renaissance Home Connect preference, students may also be able to mark paper practices themselves when they open the software from within Renaissance Home Connect.

  7. Click the assignment size that you want to use: small (10 minutes by default - see the Practice preference), medium (20 minutes) or large (30 minutes).
  8. The right side of the page shows you which objectives can be included on the practice. It may also show you that some students cannot receive new practices because they do not have objectives assigned, they already have unmarked practices or you have reached your student capacity limit for Accelerated Maths.

  9. Click Generate.
  10. Online assignments will be generated immediately. You will return to the Assignment Book. You can view a student's online assignments when you click the student's name and go to the Student Detail page.
  11. By default, the assignments will print directly to your default printer; click Done when printing is complete.

You need the Renaissance Place plug-in to print directly to your printer. Click the link provided to go to a page where you can download the plug-in; click here to find out how to download and install the Renaissance Place Print plug-in. After installing the plug-in, reprint the practice(s).

If you have chosen to preview assignments using the Paper Assignments preference, the assignment(s) will appear in an Adobe Reader window. To print the assignment(s), click the printer button in the row of Adobe Reader buttons. (In Adobe Reader X and XI, the Adobe Reader buttons may be hidden until you move the mouse over the bottom center of the document or press F8.)

Class preferences that affect practices:

  • For paper assignments only, this preference affects the font size, arrangement of possible answers and whether the objectives are listed on the assignment. The preference also sets whether duplex printing is enabled, whether you preview assignments before printing and whether fonts are embedded in assignments.

  • Sets the default practice size, the number of minutes required for each assignment size, the percentage of problems to include form review objectives and whether some objectives may be automatically assigned for students who have no assigned objectives.

  • Sets whether a student's next practice generates automatically after the student completes the current assignment or it is marked in the AccelScan Scanning software, or after a student completes the assignment using Renaissance Responders or NEO 2.
