Taking an Accelerated Reader Quiz
After a student logs in to the program, he or she can take Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice and Literacy Skills Quizzes. To see a video demonstration of how students take a quiz, click here.
Students should take quizzes within 24 hours of finishing a book. If they must wait longer and they do poorly, teachers will not know if the students had problems comprehending what they read or if they simply forgot some of the details.
Add your students and enroll them in a class in Renaissance Place. Make sure the class has Accelerated Reader ticked when you add or edit it or assign products to it.
Give each student his or her user name and password. To find them, on the Home page, click Users. Then, click View Students and search for the students. In the search results, click the Passwords tab to see students' user names and passwords.
Check the settings of the School and Class Student Quizzing Preferences.
Students should follow these steps to take a quiz:
After you log in as a student, you will see the Home page. If you are already using the program, select Home (or the Home icon) at the top of any page.
Select Accelerated Reader.
If you are enrolled in more than one Accelerated Reader class, select the name of the class for which you want to take a quiz; then, select Done. (You can change your class later by clicking your name at the top of the page and choosing Change Class.)
Accelerated Reader has a student capacity limit. If that limit has been reached for your school or school network, the program will display a message telling you that. If you see this message, make sure you tell your teacher. Then, click OK to close the message. If the student capacity limit has been reached, you cannot take a quiz until it is increased or adjusted.
Search for the book that you want to take a quiz for. Type part or all of the book title, part or all of the author's name or the quiz number. Then, select Search.
If you want to take a Vocabulary Practice Quiz, you may not need to search. The bottom of the page shows you books that you have taken Reading Practice Quizzes for, but not Vocabulary Practice Quizzes. To take a quiz for one of those books, select the title, then select Take Quiz. If you want to take a Second Try or Review Words quiz, select Vocabulary Review. If you choose to take one of these quizzes, go to step 10.
- In the list of books, select Take Quiz for the quiz you want to take. If the list is long, click (Next) and (Back) to move forward and backward through the list. Click to go to the last page of results or to go to the first page of results.
Note: If you have already taken a quiz for one of the books in the search results, you will see the "Quiz taken" message below the book description with an icon for each type of quiz that you have taken. In the example below, the student has taken the Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice and Literacy Skills Quizzes for a book title.
If you do not see the quiz you want to take:
Try searching for it again.
Talk to your teacher to see if your school has the quiz.
If necessary, click how the book was read (I was read to, I read with someone or I read by myself). The examples below show the options for primary students and older students.
If no quizzes are found for the word(s) you typed, but those words are similar to words that do match quizzes, the program may list those quizzes. You will see "Showing results for" below the search field so that you know which word(s) were used to find the quizzes shown.
If you chose a Reading Practice Quiz with Recorded Voice, you may be able to choose whether you want to use it. If so, select On to use Recorded Voice during the quiz; select Off if you do not want to use it.
If the program asks for an authorisation password, your quiz monitor needs to enter the password and select OK. (The program also asks for this if you are blocked form taking the quiz.)
Select Start Quiz.
If you are taking a quiz on a tablet and the quiz has Recorded Voice, you may need to select a second Start Quiz button.
The quiz begins. To select an answer, press the A, B, C or D key or select or click on the answer you want. A circle shows which answer you selected. You can change your answer before going on. To go to the next question, select Next.
If Recorded Voice is on, you will hear a recording of each question and the possible answers. To hear the recording of the question or a particular answer, click the item.
You can click the quiz title at the top of the page during the quiz to see information about the book and quiz.
When you have completed the quiz, you may be asked how you liked the book. If this happens, select one of the stars. Then, select Next.
Quizzes can be stopped if necessary. Select Stop Quiz at the top of the Quiz Question screen. In the window that opens, the teacher must enter the authorisation password and click Stop Quiz.
If the program asks for an authorisation password, the teacher needs to enter the password and click OK.
Next, the program shows how you did on the quiz.
If you passed the quiz, you can select Review Missed Questions to see the answers for the questions you got wrong. The program will display each question you answered incorrectly. Your answer will be circled and in red with an "X". The correct answer will be circled in green with a tick. When you have finished reviewing each question, select Next.
You may be allowed to print your TOPS Report. If so, select Print TOPS Report. When you have finished looking at the TOPS Report, select < Back.
If you passed a Reading Practice Quiz, you may be able to take the Vocabulary Practice Quiz by selecting Take Vocabulary Quiz.
Select Find My Next Book to go back to the Reading page. (Primary students select Next instead to go to the Progress page.)
If you want to log out, in the top right corner of the page, select the arrow next to your name, then select Log Out.
