Troubleshooting: Accelerated Reader

While using Accelerated Reader, you can use this page to find solutions to issues you might experience. For further assistance, see Need More Help.

Pop-up blocking software is preventing your Renaissance Place program from functioning as designed. To prevent issues with pop-up blockers, you will need to either disable or uninstall your pop-up blocker, or allow pop-ups from your Renaissance Place website.

To allow pop-ups from your Renaissance Place website when using Google Toolbar™ or Yahoo! Toolbar™, click the appropriate icon in your toolbar and make the change. You may also choose to uninstall the toolbar using the Add/Remove Programs option in the Control Panel.

Follow these instructions to disable the built-in pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer 8:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Privacy tab.
  4. Under the Pop-up Blocker section, remove the tick from "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" in IE 8, or click Settings and add your Renaissance Place website to the list of allowed sites.
  5. Click Apply, then OK again.

For all other pop-up blockers, refer to the software publisher's documentation.

There is an option in Renaissance Place and two Accelerated Reader preferences that can help with this.

Renaissance Place

Use the option to restrict student workstations in Renaissance Place to specify which computers students can use to access software other than Renaissance Home Connect. The restriction is set using the external IP address (or IP address range) as seen on the internet from the outside that identifies each computer accessing the server. For example:

  • Single IP Address: 192.168.1.5
  • IP Address range: 192.168.1.50-192.168.1.200
  • Entire subnet range: 192.168.1.*
  • Multiple subnet range: 192.168.1.*-192.168.2.*

To set up IP restrictions, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to Renaissance Place as a school network administrator.
  2. On the Home page, click Product Administration.
  3. Click Set Security Options for Students.
  4. Enter the IP address(es) or range of IP addresses that you would like students to work in Renaissance Place from.
  5. Click Save when you are finished.

Accelerated Reader Preferences

  1. In Internet Explorer 8, click the Tools menu and choose Internet Options.
  2. Click Security, then Internet, and then Custom Level.
  3. Under the Miscellaneous section, enable Allow script-initiated windows without size or position constraints and Allow websites to open windows without address or status bars.
  4. Click OK, then OK again.

The marking period displayed on Accelerated Reader TOPS reports and in Renaissance Home Connect is determined as follows:

  • The school marking period that includes the date the quiz was taken, or today's date in Renaissance Home Connect.
  • If more than one school marking period includes the date the quiz was taken, or today's date in Renaissance Home Connect, the one with the closest end date is used.
  • If more than one school marking period includes the date and they have the same end date, the shortest marking period is used.
  • If multiple school marking periods cover the same date range, the first one that was added in Renaissance Place is used.

If your school has multiple overlapping marking periods used by various classes and years, and you want to force a certain marking period to be used, you can set a target in Accelerated Reader for the marking period.

If you do not want to set individual Point and Book Level targets, just set an average percentage correct target for the class, which according to best practices is 85% for all students.

Update the Renaissance Wireless Server to the latest version by following these steps:

  1. Start the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility:
    • Windows: Start > All Programs > Renaissance Wireless Server > Renaissance Wireless Server Utility.
    • Macintosh: In your computer's Applications folder, open the Renaissance Wireless Server folder. Then, double-click Renaissance Wireless Server Utility.
  2. Enter the Administrator PIN, and then click OK.
  3. Click Stop to stop the Renaissance Wireless Server.
  4. Click OK on the message stating the Renaissance Wireless Server has been shut down.
  5. Close out of the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility.
  6. Install the latest version of NEO Manager, which is available as a free download from http://www.renlearn.co.uk/neo-2/manuals-and-downloads/.
  7. Go back to the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility and click Start.
  8. Enter the Administrator PIN, and then click OK.
  9. Switch to the Server Settings tab.
  10. Click Renaissance Place Settings.
  11. Ensure the correct Renaissance Place server address is entered in the field provided, and then click Verify.
  12. Once the connection has been verified, click OK.
  13. On the NEO 2, start the Accelerated Reader SmartApplet.
  14. If you are asked, "Do you want to stay connected...", press N to answer no and search for networks.
  15. Select the desired receiver network from the list.
  16. Attempt to log in to Accelerated Reader and begin working.

This will occur if the Renaissance Place site address is not entered into the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility, or if the Renaissance Wireless Server has not been upgraded to the appropriate version.

  1. Open the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility by browsing to one of the following locations:
    • Windows: Start > All Programs > Renaissance Wireless Server > Renaissance Wireless Server Utility.
    • Macintosh: In your computer's Applications folder, open the Renaissance Wireless Server folder. Then, double-click Renaissance Wireless Server Utility.
  2. Enter the Administrator PIN, and click the Server Settings tab.
  3. Click Renaissance Place Settings, enter your Renaissance Place site address, click Verify, and then click OK.
    • If you do not see the Renaissance Place Settings button, close the Utility, then download and install the latest NEO Manager from http://www.renlearn.co.uk/neo-2/manuals-and-downloads/. This installation will include the latest version of the Renaissance Wireless Server. After the update completes, repeat steps 1-3.
    • If you receive an error when clicking the Verify button, such as "Error communicating with the RP Server", click Check Software Requirements on the Home page of your Renaissance Place site. Enter the address that appears next to "Your Server Name or IP Address is:".
  4. Close the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility.
  5. On the NEO 2s, log back in to the Accelerated Reader SmartApplet. Students should now be able to connect successfully.

This can occur if the student is enrolled in multiple Accelerated Reader classes that have different marking periods set for targets.

You can also see the double asterisks in the Reading Practice Targets Record Book if the student has a target in another class for a different marking period with overlapping dates.

You will need to manually delete and then re-enter the target that is duplicated for each student. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Home page, click Accelerated Reader, then Record Books and Targets.
  2. Click Reading Practice Targets.
  3. Click a student's name on the Edit Reading Practice Targets page.
  4. On the View Student Reading Practice Targets page you will see all marking periods and targets. Click Delete for each duplicated target. You will be deleting the target that has the actual point and book level set. Click OK to confirm the deletion.
  5. Click Back to return to the Edit Reading Practice Targets page and choose the desired marking period from the drop-down list at the top of the page.
  6. In the row for that student, enter the new target information.
  7. Click Save when completed.
  8. Repeat these steps for each student experiencing the issue.
