Troubleshooting and Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting

Resolution 1

If any programs need to be installed or updated, contact your school's IT Department/ICT Support.

For more information, see Installing the Necessary Software to Use MathsFacts in a Flash.

Resolution 2

If you have downloaded/updated all of the required software, a pop-up blocker may be causing the error.

Note: Before disabling a pop-up blocker, contact your school's  IT Department/ICT Support.

For more information, see the Knowledge Base article 4751376.

Students must work in MathsFacts in a Flash at school before they can work in Renaissance Home Connect.

Make sure that a teacher is assigned to the class, MathsFacts in a Flash is selected for the class and that students are enrolled in the class.

For more information, see Getting Ready for the New School Year.

When a student logs in and tries to work on two computers or tablets at the same time, MathsFacts in a Flash imposes a five minute lock-out.

The five minute lock-out minimises the chance of a student working in the software on more than one computer or tablet at a time.

Possible causes

  • The student is logged in at another computer or tablet and selected the link to start working in MathsFacts in a Flash.
  • The student closed the practice or test browser window before completing the test.
  • The computer or tablet the student was working on crashed or lost connection to the Renaissance Place server.

If any of the above scenarios occur and the student moves to another computer or tablet, logs in and tries to use MathsFacts in a Flash, the message "This student is already logged in" will display.

Resolution

If possible, the student should log out of the second computer or tablet, return to the first computer or tablet and finish the practice or test. This assumes that the practice or test is open on the first computer or tablet.

If the session on the first computer or tablet closed unexpectedly, the student will need to wait five minutes for the lock to clear.

If a practice or test window is closed before a student completes the practice or test, the work cannot be resumed. The student must start over from the beginning.

Teachers can print TOPS reports from the Assignment Book.

Computer or Tablet

When a practice or test is completed on a computer or tablet using MathsFacts in a Flash:

To see a TOPS Report of their work, students select the TOPS button.

Next, to print the TOPS Report, students select the Print button.

Note: TOPS reports do not automatically print when a practice or test is completed on a computer or tablet using MathsFacts in a Flash RP; students must select the Print button.

On tablets, additional printer setup may be required in order to print the report. The ability to print from a tablet depends on the type of tablet being used, the type of printer being used and/or the program or system being used to connect the tablet to a printer. For assistance, contact your school's IT Department/ICT Support.

NEO 2 and/or Renaissance Responder

By default, TOPS reports print automatically for online work completed on a NEO 2.

You may be assigned:

  • More than one user type (role/position)
  • To more than one school
  • Extra capabilities

Make sure that you are using the correct user type and/or school.

  1. Go to the Home page.
  2. Use the drop-down list to choose the desired role or school.

Alternatively, your administrator may have changed the capabilities assigned to you.

For more information, see Capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

MathsFacts in a Flash and Renaissance Place : General Questions

Yes.

PDF Viewer (such as Adobe Reader)

To view and/or print reports, manuals and other documents, you will need a PDF viewer (such as Adobe Reader). For more information, see Check Software Requirements.

NEO 2 and Responder

If you use NEO 2s and/or Responders, the Renaissance Wireless Server Utility must be installed on the computer that the Renaissance Receiver is connected to. This must be completed to allow MathsFacts in a Flash to use NEO 2s and Renaissance Responders to communicate with Renaissance Place.

The Renaissance Wireless Server Utility is a program that:

  • Allows communication between the hardware pieces (Renaissance Receivers, NEO 2s and Responders) and the software pieces (MathsFacts in a Flash and Renaissance Place)
  • Allows you to set the Renaissance Place URL.

The Renaissance Wireless Server Utility is automatically installed as part of the installation of any of the four programs listed below. Which of these four programs you use depends on the other software (Accelerated Maths Live or the 2Know! Classroom Response System) and hardware (NEO 2 or Responder) your school uses.

NEO Manager: Download this from www.renlearn.co.uk/neo-2/manuals-and-downloads/

2Know! Toolbar: Download this from www.renlearn.co.uk/neo-2/manuals-and-downloads/

Renaissance Responder Program: Download this from the Downloads page.

AccelTest: Download this from www.renlearn.co.uk/neo-2/manuals-and-downloads/

Tablets: To use tablets with MathsFacts in a Flash, you do not need to download or install an app. You must either connect to your school's Renaissance Place web address (found on the Downloads page) or to your school's Renaissance Home Connect web address (found in the Renaissance Home Connect Informational Letter). On tablets, additional printer setup may be required in order to print the TOPS Report. The ability to print from a tablet depends on the type of tablet being used, the type of printer being used and/or the program or system being used to connect the tablet to a printer. For assistance, contact your IT Department/ICT Support.

For the technical requirements, view: http://doc.renlearn.com/KMNet/R003777603GF3F7F.pdf.

The RPID is found on the Login page (where you log in) and the Downloads page.

By default, adding or deleting a student from a class is completed by a school network administrator or your school administrator.

Adding or deleting a student is completed through Renaissance Place.

Adding Students (to Renaissance Place)

Deleting Students (from Renaissance Place)

Your school network administrator or school administrator will have to change the capabilities assigned to the teacher (or teachers). The capability to enroll students in classes is the Manage Courses and Classes capability. However, please note that teachers who have this capability can also do the following:

  • Assign or unassign products from any and all classes in their school.
  • Assign the primary teacher and assign or unassign team teachers for any and all classes in their school.
  • Enrol or unenrol students in any and all classes in their school.
  • Create new courses and classes in their school (valid for all other users to see and use) or copy classes from the previous school year.
  • Delete courses in their school (which will delete all classes associated with the course).

You can see and print a list of student user names and passwords in Renaissance Place.

You may also contact your school administrator or school network administrator.

All accounts are automatically unlocked at midnight each day.

Accounts can be unlocked as needed (you do not have to wait).

School Network administrators can unlock any user account.

School administrators can unlock accounts for users at their school.

Teachers can unlock accounts for students enrolled in their classes.

How to unlock student accounts

If a school network administrator user name or password is forgotten, or if a school network administrator account is locked, please contact Renaissance Learning.

School network administrators can unlock any user account.

School administrators can unlock accounts for users at their school.

Teachers can unlock accounts for students enrolled in their classes.

Teacher, school staff, school administrator and school network staff accounts can be immediately unlocked.

MathsFacts in a Flash has several different time settings:

  • Reported Time Score vs. Completion Time
  • Time-Out (per problem, practice or test)
  • Mastery Time
  • Time Targets
  • Best Times

Internet protocol (IP) addresses identify the computer being used. IP restrictions are used to determine the computers that can connect to your school's server.

The authorisation password is the password used by a teacher and/or test monitor to stop a practice or test before it is finished.

Renaissance Learning recommends that schools set restrictions within the software such as authorisation passwords and IP restrictions. Both monitor passwords and IP restrictions will help prevent working from outside the school (unless students use Renaissance Home Connect).

This is Renaissance Learning's recommendation for all schools, regardless of what devices they are using to ensure that testing takes place in a secure, monitored environment.

By default, IP restrictions are set by server administrators and/or school network administrators.

Change the setting of the Question Type Preference.

Change the setting of the Time-Out Preference.

After a Practice or Test

You cannot delete a practice or test directly.

However, you can reset a level, which deletes all of the student's work on that level.

Yes.

Use the TOPS Report Preference to change when the TOPS Report prints.

Yes, with restrictions.

Practice information will not transfer.

You can only transfer information:

  • about mastered levels
  • from a class that is no longer active

Example: A student has advanced from year 3 to year 4; you can transfer the student's mastered level information from year 3 to year 4.

Once students master a level, they can always try to improve their personal best time for that level. This is known as Challenging Best Times.

When a student masters a level, the time and date for that test automatically becomes the personal best time and date for that level. This date and time will always be the Mastery Time and date; the Best Time date and time may change as the student achieves a new personal best time.

Best Times (personal best times) are not the same thing as Time Targets.

When students achieve new personal best times for completing a test, a congratulatory message will be included on their TOPS report. For more information, see TOPS Report.

The Parent Report includes best time information: the best time achieved by the student for a level and the date the time was achieved. For more information, see Parent Report.

For more information, see Best Times.

One way is to check to see how long the student has been working on the level and the number of tests taken without success. If a students takes five or more tests without mastering the level, the student may be struggling.

Yes. MathsFacts in a Flash has many practice materials that can be printed.

For more information, see Printing Practice Materials.

Benchmarks

Benchmarks are levels that students must master by a target date.

School network administrators and school administrators choose the target date and levels.

Notes:

All users can view the Benchmarks Preference page.

Only school network administrators and school administrators can edit the benchmark levels.

Administrators can either use the default benchmark levels and target date or select different levels and a different date.

The use of benchmarks is optional, but highly recommended. The Summary Dashboard uses benchmark data, which gives you a high-level overview of your students' performance.

To open the Dashboard, go to the Home page and select Summary Dashboard under Dashboards and Reporting.

View the Benchmarks Set for Mastery Table. This table shows the benchmarks set for your school.

To view this table:

  1. Go to the Assignment Book.
  2. Select a student.
  3. Select one of these links (on the left side): Set Level, Hold/Reset, Edit Mastery Time, Add/Remove Level, or Reorder.

Levels

Yes. For more information, see Setting a Level.

When you put a level on hold, it does not delete any completed work.

In the Assignment Book, levels placed on hold are indicated with this symbol . The program will not administer practices or tests to the student at this level until the hold is removed.

When you reset a level, all completed work on that level is deleted.

For more information, see Holding or Resetting Levels.

Students must achieve 100% accuracy and a time score that is at or below the mastery level.

You cannot change the accuracy requirement (100%).

You can change the time requirement.

For more information, see Mastery Criteria.
